Meet Skyler Dortch! As a sous chef for Lure, he enjoys continuing to learn in the kitchen, while passing on his insight to his peers. Outside of work, you’ll likely find him at Waffle House or cruising around Atlanta on his Harley Davidson bike. Learn more about him in our #FGRFamily Spotlight below.
How did you get into the restaurant industry?
I kinda just fell into it. Started off as a dishwasher and busboy. I like the culture of the kitchen, so I never really fell out of it, because it seemed to be a good fit for me as someone with a good work ethic.
How long have you been with Fifth Group?
Two and a half years.
What is your favorite part about being part of the FGR family?
They’ve taken the time to develop me. I started off as a part time lunch cook and kept growing with them, and eventually they promoted me and saw potential in me. It’s really cool that they’ve taken the time to develop someone as young as I am.
What’s your favorite dish and drink at Lure?
I’m not really a big drinker but they make their own sodas. I always go for the crab dip. It’s super delicious.
Where did you grow up?
Paulding County, GA.
What was your favorite meal as a child?
Peanut butter banana sandwiches, fried.
What is a fun fact about you?
I like motorcycles – Harley Davidsons, dirt bikes, stuff like that. Right now I got a Harley. Before that I had a Supermoto dirt bike. I got hurt on it, so I decided to get something a little safer.
What part of town do you live in?
I live in Mableton. I’ve worked in Atlanta for about 5 years now.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Atlanta when you’re not working?
Probably riding through the city on my bike. At night after I get off, there’s several bars nearby, so I’ll have a couple drinks with friends and coworkers.
What’s your (food-related) guilty pleasure?
I’m a big Waffle House guy. Either the Texas cheesesteak or the Texas bacon egg and cheese, hash browns. I’m usually there three times a week. They kinda know me there by now. Late at night – it’s the only spot that’s open when I get off work.
What’s your favorite travel destination?
I am a traveler. Year before last I went to Europe – Germany, Barcelona. Next year I plan on taking a bike ride across the country. I don’t have a favorite place but I like to go to different places.
I’m a Juggalo. ICP has their own cult following called the Juggalos.
Favorite celebrity chef?
What are three adjectives that best describe you?
Hard working, fun loving, adventurous.
Who inspires you most in your career?
Jack McGinn. He’s the executive chef at South City Kitchen Vinings.
If you could invite one person, living or dead to dinner at a Fifth Group Restaurant, who would it be, where would you take them and why?
It’d have to be one of my favorite rappers. I’ve always had a fantasy of one of them coming into the restaurant. Probably Yelawolf at Ecco Midtown. I do like the cuisine there. I like Mediterranean Italian cuisine. He’d be a party.
What are your career goals?
To be a culinary teacher. Once I’m old and decrepit, and I can’t work the line anymore, that’s my goal. That’s one of the things I like about being a chef is you continue to learn and also teach people.
