Execution sous chef Allie Underwood has been on the Bold Catering team for just over five years, and during that time has developed a passion for event execution and the creative action stations Bold is known for. The Oakland, Calif. native moved to the east coast with her family in 2007 before graduating from Le Cordon Bleu and joining the Bold team in late 2013. Allie was promoted from event chef to execution sous chef in December 2018, and now leads the back-of-house culinary team in their pursuit of client satisfaction and maintaining the Fifth Group Restaurants and Bold Catering standards of service.
Check out our Q&A with Allie:
What is your favorite part about being on the Bold Catering & Design team?
Our team is truly a family – there’s a sense of solidarity and camaraderie I’ve never felt in any other job.
How did your career in events begin?
One of my culinary school classmates let me know that the Bold team needed some supplemental help for a large event at The Tabernacle. I jumped right in and started on the prep team shortly afterward.
What’s your favorite Bold action station?
The Donut Went Down to Georgia, or the barbecue sundae station with all the toppings!
Favorite venue for an event?
King Plow is our home, so I’m a little biased here! I also love the airiness and floor-to-ceiling windows at Summerour, or the beautiful surroundings at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
What’s your best excuse to throw a party?
There doesn’t need to be any excuse! The weather’s nice… I don’t have to work that day… there’s no bad time for a party!
What’s a fun fact about yourself?
I just got engaged on New Year’s Day! My fiancé asked me at a New Year’s Day barbecue with both of our families present.
When you’re not working, what do you love to do?
I love to shop and spend time with my family – particularly my niece and nephew!
What’s your favorite Fifth Group Restaurants dish?
Alma Cocina’s fried chihuahua cheese with salsa verde
What’s your go-to playlist?
iTunes’ “Breaking R&B” and “It’s Lit”
I got engaged AND promoted in the past few months, so I’d have to say right now, it’s Cardi B’s “Living My Best Life”!
What’s your favorite thing about Atlanta?
I love the diversity and the culture in Atlanta. There are so many historic buildings, job opportunities and – best of all – restaurants to enjoy here!
What are three adjectives that best describe you?
Adventurous, honest and driven
Who inspires you most in your career?
I don’t have one person in particular, but I’m very inspired by the contingent of driven young women in the culinary industry.
If you could invite one person, living or dead to dinner at a Fifth Group Restaurant, where would you take them and why?
I’d invite my uncle Tracey, who passed a few years ago. It doesn’t matter where we go, I’d just like to spend a few more moments with him!
