#FGRFamily Spotlight | Mike McGill

Meet one of our star servers at Ecco Midtown, Mike McGill! Mike has been a beloved member of the Fifth Group family for over 11 years. A creative at heart, he enjoys jamming with his band, House of Bacchus, in his spare time. Learn more about Mike and all of his top-notch music suggestions below in today’s #FGRFamily Spotlight!

What are some of your favorite parts about working at Ecco Midtown?

I’m really proud to serve our food and wine. The team of chefs has always done a really nice job, which makes me excited to showcase their food. Also, we all work very well together as a team – you never have to worry about anyone pulling their weight.

How long have you been with Fifth Group Restaurants?

I started in April 2002 at what used to be Food Studio and moved over to Ecco Midtown in 2008 – a little over 11 years!

How did you get started in the restaurant industry?

I started out as a dishwasher in high school and cleaned tables. Toward the middle of high school, I was really determined to get started with a music career and the restaurant industry provided a flexible schedule for me to pursue that. I loved the industry and have stuck with it ever since.

What is your favorite part about being in the Fifth Group family?

I’ve worked in a lot of places that talk about high standards, but didn’t really practice what they preach. I think Fifth Group does a nice job of living their values and has always had good owners, good managers and good colleagues. They truly take care of their employees in a way you don’t find at most restaurants.

Where did you grow up?

Atlanta suburbs. I moved here from Louisiana when I was six!

What is a fun fact about you?

My wife is a very talented artist – she paints, sculpts and draws.

What’s your favorite thing to do in Atlanta when you’re not working?

I like to write songs and work with my band, House of Bacchus. We play punchy, accessible alternative rock.

What’s your (food-related) guilty pleasure?

Whopper with cheese combo OR tiramisu from Publix – it’s the best tiramisu I’ve ever had!

Favorite band?

A classic favorite – The Beatles!

Favorite celebrity chef?

I don’t watch a lot of celebrity chefs on TV, but I learn a lot from our chefs. Brent Banda and Chip Ulbrich are both brilliant.

What are three adjectives that best describe you?

Eclectic, engaging, enthusiastic!

Who inspires you most in your career?

In the restaurant, I’ve had so many great managers over the years. For music, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder have always been two big inspirations.
